San Juan Capistrano, the equestrian capital of the West, has long been a hub for world-class riders. Once home to elite polo tournaments, it hosted the Christopher Reeve Celebrity Polo Classics, led by Joan Irvine Smith, to support spinal cord research. The town’s equestrian legacy continues at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, a premier venue for international competitions, including the US Olympic Equestrian Trials and the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup.
Equestrian culture is woven into San Juan Capistrano’s identity, from the Swallow’s Day Parade to its rich history of ranching and horsemanship. Now, polo returns to the Riding Park, celebrating the town’s deep equestrian roots while ushering in an exciting new chapter.
The Inaugural Capistrano Polo Classic brings polo back to San Juan Capistrano on May 2nd, 2026, uniting top Southern California players in a thrilling competition. Hosted by the San Juan Capistrano Equestrian Coalition, this event blends sport, Western-inspired hospitality, and the town’s rich equestrian heritage.
Set at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, guests will enjoy a VIP lunch, a Show Jumpers vs. Cowboys pre-match, live music, and signature drinks.
